Teething! When does your little one get them and what can you do for them?

Teeth!
It's inevitable; your little one's teeth will come through at some point. Some babies are even born with teeth! Usually, the first teeth come through between 4 and 7 months, but as you will experience many times: every child follows their own schedule in almost everything and one will be earlier than the other. This is all completely normal! When they do come through, it looks so cute! A real milestone!
Once your little one starts putting almost everything in their mouth and drooling profusely, you can be almost certain that it's time. Did you know that teeth already grow under your baby's gums during pregnancy? Top tip: don't look up a picture of that.
Most little ones suffer from teething, but luckily there is plenty you can do to help ease the pain. This is great to know, because about one tooth comes through per month after the first one is spotted!
When do teeth come through?
There are a lot of teething charts out there. These charts are all based on averages, so your little one probably won’t stick to them. Still, it’s nice to have an idea of what to expect so you can stock up on wine. Um, teethers, we mean teethers!
We have made a card from our own variation on the scheme that you can order right away if you do choose a Chewie! The Chewie of course as relief for your little one, the card as support for you. You got this. It will pass! In about 3 years. When the baby teeth are complete.

As you can see in the chart, there is an order of when which teeth come through. You can also find this chart in the webshop . No surprise: these are also averages and you will see that your little one will get the upper incisors first (on average, these are the lower incisors first and then the upper). It is actually a kind of ping-pong from bottom to top and back again. Until all teeth and molars have come through. A complete set of baby teeth consists of eight molars and twelve teeth!
What do I notice about my little one?
As we just mentioned, many little ones suffer from teething. They often drool, they cry more, you can often feel a lump in the gums that is sometimes red, they touch their ears a lot and they put almost everything in their mouths to bite and suck on. We have just the right and safe solution for that ;)
You can find all our chew toys on the Chewies page
Often your little one also eats and sleeps poorly(er), which does not contribute to the best mood. It is really a matter of persevering, because once a tooth has come through, the complaints often disappear quickly.
Many parents notice even more with their little one. These symptoms have never been scientifically proven, but are very often mentioned in combination with teething: fever, sour diarrhea and red bottom with rash. If your little one has a fever, it is always wise to consult your family doctor.
Help!
That's all well and good, but what can you do to support your little one (and yourself) through these discomforts?
Number 1 is of course: Love! Your little one is in pain, tired and listless and just needs you so much. Cuddle, sing, read and give lots of kisses!
Give your little one something to chew on! We have the most beautiful teething rings and rattles in our range that relieve pain and meet the need to chew, suck and bite. All our toys have been extensively tested and certified according to the European toy standard and the Dutch Commodities Act. This means that they have a CE mark and are therefore completely safe for your little one! Our Duo Cool Chewie can even be placed in the refrigerator and thus also provides cooling for the gums.
You can massage your little one's gums by gently rubbing them with a (clean and possibly cooled) finger.
If your little one is ready for solid food, you can give them some chilled or cold food and let the hot food cool down a little longer than usual or not heat it up for too long.
There are all kinds of remedies on the market to relieve the pain, our advice is to first discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.
A tooth has come through! What now?
Cleaning! Ooo, this is so much fun, you can start a new ritual together!
Use a toothbrush and toothpaste suitable for babies and small children and make it a party! Until your little one is 2 years old, it is recommended to brush once a day. After that, brush twice a day.
It is a good idea to start 'practicing' even before teeth appear. Give your little one a suitable toothbrush and let them explore and experience that strange feeling in their mouth. There is a good chance that brushing will not be as difficult as it seems once teeth appear!
Has a tooth already come through and/or is brushing still a bit of an effort? Then put on a brushing song or brushing app (search online, there are plenty!), add a nice dance and make the brushing party even bigger!
And if you prepare a Chewie in advance, you can give it to him immediately after brushing to make the party complete ;)
